Dumbing Down

By Henry · Comments (0)

We are not a mega church nor do we feel that God has called us to be one. We have our own DNA and God is constantly developing us in our short life to become the church He wants us to be and not what any of us want LPC to be. We know that Life Point Church exists to develop fully devoted followers of Jesus. We do that by Loving Others, Investing in people, Following Jesus and Engaging culture. We seek to be Real, Rockin, and Relevant.

But that does not mean we can't learn from Mega Churches. Leadership Network recently released some interesting research on who actually attends a mega church. Their findings are interesting.Findings in the survey stretch from pure demographics to the nature and quality of mega church attenders' spiritual life. Among the most significant discoveries are:

  • The average age of mega church attenders is 40, compared to nearly 53 at a typical Protestant church. Nearly two-thirds of mega church attenders are under 45, double the numbers in Protestant congregations of all sizes. The vast majority are between 18 and 44.
  • Nearly a third of mega church attenders are single, compared to 10 percent in a typical Protestant church. They also tend to be wealthier and better educated.
  • Nearly all those surveyed — 98 percent, including visitors — described themselves as a "committed follower of Jesus Christ." Nearly a quarter hadn't been in any church for a long time before coming to the mega church.
  • Sixty-two percent of mega church attendees said they had experienced much spiritual growth in the past year. But that does not always translate to behavior churches expect of members: nearly 45 percent of mega church attenders never volunteer at the church and 32 percent give little or no money to the congregation.
  • "The ethos of the megachurch is to say 'You can't just sit there and spectate, that's not enough, you've got to do this or do that,'" said study co-director Scott Thumma, a sociologist at the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. "But a lot of people said 'I'm perfectly happy coming here and doing that.'"
  • Divided loyalties also might play a role: just three-quarters described the mega church they were attending as their "home" church, and many said they were attending more than one church.
  • The majority of mega church attenders are not necessarily new to Christianity, but nearly a quarter had not recently been in another church before coming to a mega church.

  • While newcomers almost always attend a mega church at the invitation of family, friends or co-workers, the real attraction tends to be the church's reputation, worship style and senior pastor.

  • Long-term attendance flows from an appreciation for the church's music/arts, social and community outreach, and adult-oriented programs.

  • 45 percent of mega church attenders never volunteer at the church.

Now lets "Dumb" that down for us, a new church plant:

  1. The average age is 45 and under.
  2. 30% are single
  3. More educated and affluent
  4. Not new to Christianity but either never been in church or been disconnected from church for a long period of time
  5. They come almost EXCLUSIVELY by PERSONAL INVITATION
  6. They come back because of Church's Reputation, Worship Style, and Senior Pastor and His teaching.
  7. Long timers keep coming because of church's music/arts, social and community outreach, and adult-oriented programs
  8. 45% NEVER volunteer

Now at LPC, our average age is 50 and under with the real average closer to 45. Around 30% of LPC'ers are single and are more educated but not so affluent (current economy). Almost EVERYONE came from a personal invitation. And I believe people keep coming back for worship, teaching, and fellowship.

What do we have to work on to GROW...

1: INVITE, INVITE, and INVITE

2: Excellence in Worship, and Teaching

3: We need MORE social and community outreach

4: We need MORE adult programs

5: We need MORE people VOLUNTEERING

All in all, LPC is poised for a movement of God to reach this area for Jesus. As we pray and I mean please really pray, that all we do at LPC furthers HIS kingdom and we get people excited about the person of Jesus again. This will make any church grow

  • Today was The Best Service we have had at LPC yet. I mean God showed up in a HUGE way
  • Dave and the Praize Team were hitting it on all cylinders. I mean worship was AWESOME!!
  • Cindy, Lisa, Brad and Dave... you took us into the very presence of God to worship Him. WOW
  • We finished up the series The Bible: Believe It Or Not"
  • I think it was one of the best series we have done. We studied Mark 5: 1-20 and how Jesus came to a single divine appointment with The Tombstone Terrorist
  • We learned that Jesus has called us to "TELL OUR STORY". We Must DESIRE Him and Then DECLARE Him
  • Dave gave a POWERFUL testimony yesterday, just telling his story. It was awesome.
  • My XP Mike really cleans up well. He looked rocking yesterday. You have no idea what he and Theresa do to make Sundays and Wednesdays happen.
  • Vanessa and Dave we missed you and Emery but I am glad you took some time off.
  • My boy Rick was back yesterday looking just plain Skinny. Marlo, you got a stud muffin on your hands
  • One of the many highlights of the day was seeing my brother and old friend Tom come today. Man I missed you and glad you came. Looking forward to Tuesday morning doing the coffee thing and catching up
  • God is at work in some mighty ways at LPC. Thank you for all the prayers and I really believe God has shown us our new home. It is perfect.
  • Stay tuned and be praying for His will to be done this week for the new building.
  • I have a very special brother that needs prayer for him and his family and church. God knows his name. just stop right now and say a little prayer for him please
  • And Last but not least... My dear sister and ministry co-worker Janice... Thanks to you and all of your "family" for yesterday. God brought us together for a reason and I am looking forward to seeing what He has planned. I can't wait to get together with you this week.
  • Man... we worshiped today. God was there today. God spoke today, God moved today. God gave us a glimpse of what every Sunday at LPC will be like.
  • All praise and honor and glory goes to our Lord Jesus
  • Man I love LPC and what God has humbly let me do.

Back To Blogging

By Henry · Comments (0)
Usually I take a month off blogging at some point in the year. Last year it was June (I think)  but this year it is May. I think it is healthy to walk away for awhile from social networking of any kind. But I am back and here is my goal for blogging the next 7 months til the end of the year:
1: Write more of the LPC adventure to help other church planters
2: Communicate more with the LPC people. As you grow, I think this is a way for everyone to get connected to the pastor since the pastor will not be able to connect on an intimate level with everyone.
3: To be open and transparent more.  I struggle, you struggle and there needs to be an openness for all Christ-Followers and Non Christ-Followers to see that we all have things in our lives God is working with us on.
4: To use this blog to glorify Jesus in every post in every action.
What I am NOT going to do ever again is:
1: Use my blog for any type of personal attack. I believe God wants no unwholesome word to come out of our mouths at anytime and especially through emails and blogs.
2: Never criticize another church or pastor. The church is the bride of Christ and I want to respect it and Him in all areas of my life. Talking about other pastors and churches in a negative light takes away from the body of Christ
3: Never use my blog to spread gossip or innuendos of any type. On any level. If what I want to say does not glorify Jesus it will not come from my mouth or blog.
4:  Not to write just for the sake of writing something. If God leads me to post something I will. If He does not I wont.My goal is to glorify Jesus in everything I do in word or deed. I want to build up the body of Christ and build Life Point Church for His glory while helping church planters and followers and non-followers of Jesus in any way I can.
So... with that said just a couple of things: 2 Actually:
1: We have 2 surprise guests coming next Sunday. This next Sunday is going to be a SPECIAL WORSHIP SERVICE. Trust me, you will not want to miss. We now start at 10:00 am SHARP.
2: Y-God this week will BLOW YOUR SOCKS OFF!! We start at 6:30 with food (thanks Pastor Mike and his family for this ministry). Worship starts at 7:00 pm SHARP.
Thanks for all the emails and tweets saying you missed the blog. I am back with a whole new agenda and purpose for the musings of a church planter in SW Florida.
